Pediatricians and other experts answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccines.
Pediatrician Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH explains the recommendations for kids with chronic conditions and the COVID-19 vaccine. Always consult with a health care provider for medical advice.
Parents have asked this question a lot, “What if my child has a chronic disease? Their medical health is fragile and is this vaccine safe for them? And should they get it?” And the answer is it is safe for them and they should especially get it because kids who have chronic illness actually have risk to have more complications if they get COVID. And, so, protecting them from ever being infected with COVID is the best way to keep them safe during this pandemic. So, if your child has a chronic condition, consider getting the COVID vaccine to protect them from getting COVID, which can make their chronic condition worse, or make them sick, which could result in hospitalization. If you have questions about whether your child can get the COVID vaccine, given their medical history, reach out to their provider and talk more about making this choice for them.
