How do we know the COVID vaccines are safe?

Health care workers answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccines.

Yvonne Maldonado, MD explains the rigorous testing that goes into ensuring the COVID vaccines are safe.

I have been following the production and the clinical trials of these vaccines since they started last year. And I can tell you that the companies and the FDA and CDC have been entirely transparent with the data that they have used not only to create the clinical trials but the data that have been used to grant emergency use.

And the Food and Drug Administration and the CDC have the most stringent approval and surveillance capacity for vaccines and other biologic products of any country in the world. Their rigorous methodologies to review and approve products as well as maintain surveillance for safety and efficacy, even after licensure are unparalleled in the world. So, we have an extremely safe and effective system in the United States to track not only vaccines, but other products as well.
