Health care workers answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccines.
Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD explains how Black scientists and researchers were involved in the COVID vaccine research.
I was clearly and still am on the NIH panels. And if you look at each of those panels, which have been very public, you see other Black scientists, other Latinx scientists at the table, making the decisions, making the recommendations, as we would say, “They’re in the room where it is happening.” And we have ensured that each of the four historically black medical schools—that we are all vaccine trial sites.
We know that we will have the opportunity to enroll more diverse participants. And so, we’ve been very involved with that. I know that at every level, even the phase one and phase two research trials, well, you know, they look at safety and efficacy and as smaller cohorts there were Black scientists and Latinx scientists who have been involved in that work.
